Nowadays, Blogging is all the rage and most Instagram Bio reads, A Blogger. Gravitating eyeballs owing to glamorous lifestyle, adventures, flexible work hours, being your own boss, Blogging is wading from hobby to a full time job. 90% of the people loves travel and fashion which compels majority of the population to be a travel blogger or a fashion blogger. The former is misconstrued as hippie, wanderer, jobless while latter is termed as narcissistic, air head, futile and so on. Yes, blogging seems great but we earn all these epithets and eventually, we shove it aside delightedly. Although at times, the struggles of blogging can actually make you succumb to these allegations. Specially, when you have multiple jobs to handle and maintaining a blog, you will be burning candle at both ends. And in spite of working your fingers to the bone, you may still not have enough traffic on your website. You give up eventually and go back to your salt mines. Blogging turns a hobby again and it’s the end.

So today, I am going to cover fashion blogging specifically and unique ways to stand out from the crowd of Fashion Bloggers. These are my secrets which no blogger will tell you.

1) How to find “Unique Content”?

Now, I may earn snide remarks for this juvenile suggestion but certain things always work. It is human nature to take things for granted when there is no pressure or organization. We have this adrenaline rush to start a blog and after a month or two, it dwindles. You write on topics haphazardly without researching enough leading to abysmal content. And cliche but true, “Content is Key”.

So, how to always find unique content?

  • Go through fashion blogs than merely going through Instagram profiles of fashion. Now going through don’t refer copying their style but lending your personal style to those concepts. Also, heed to the nuances of language, the presentation, fonts and quality of pictures, various angles of the story; all of it is highly underestimated a lot in blogging. At the end.

My favorite fashion blogs are:

(Instagram : @skullsandtulles)

http://www.vivaciouswish.com/

(Instagram : @vivacious_wish)

http://www.whowhatwear.com/

(Instagram: @salonisaysthat)

http://stylecaster.com/

https://www.theblondesalad.com/

https://www.manrepeller.com/

My favorite YouTube channels are:

They are basically with reference to fashion, styling and unique angles for fashion photography.

Mango Street

Chriselle Lim

Jessica Kobeissi

c) Maintain a Creative Eye

Creativity is inherent in few but it can also be inculcated.

  • Look around for color palettes; be it of clothes, nature or things around.

  •  Always hunt for unique locations which isn’t synonymous to exotic.

e.g :A shutter of a dark color is a unique location for a spring outfit.

e.g. Foliage of leaves is a perfect location for a fairy tale theme.

e.g. Even ruins of a particular place can work amazingly well for an ethnic shoot

Prior to the day of shoot, vacate your entire wardrobe and go through a trial and error method for all outfits. Yes, you are very well aware of your outfits but until and unless, you see them together, you can’t pair it uniquely. This habit really helped me a lot to come up with amazing styles.

2) Fashion is more than OOTD.

Yes, Instagram introduced this OOTD which botched up the true nature of fashion. So, Influencers and Bloggers are all about themselves. They forget everyone has different body types, different personalities, different ethnicites and blindly follow trends, which isn’t fashion. This doesn’t augurs sacrificing personal style but brings out the need to balance your personal style with the style of your target audience.

So, how to work on it?

  • As Instagram always reflects a person’s individuality with first nine grids, keep one grid for the universal trend which works despite of unique personalities.
  • Write about something which is more than Fashion

Are you arching your eyebrows over this suggestion? Why on earth should I write anything apart from fashion being a fashion blogger, right? But sometimes, we crave for enlightening, inspiring and deep content over the superficial ones such as “outfit of the day” and “what I wore” posts.

Few examples are:

  • Mention your views about the term, “Girl Boss”?
  • What do you think about true fashion?
  • Your struggle as a fashion Blogger?
  • Why you decided to be a Blogger?
  • What do you think about Instagram, influencers and fashion’s correlation?

4) Introduce Newsletters

I had realized the importance of newsletters lately as reaching the target audience is as essential as writing a good post. Yes, you will be promoting it on social media but introducing newsletters enable you to keep the personal relation with your followers and also alert them of your posts regularly.

Always keep the newsletters useful for your target audience. Working on this lately.

5) Hashtags, Hashtags, Hashtags

This is an era of hashtag and I truly mean it. Even if you have written the best post on earth, reaching the right target audience decides the destiny of it. And, hashtags wades through this mission more easily.

Apps like Focalmark and Preview App are my personal favorites for hashtag finders.

You can also go on explore page and type the most related hashtags and find the popularity of each. For e.g You search for “travelblogger”, you may find a list of other related hashtags which can be used accordingly.

Few popular hashtags for fashion bloggers are #fashiondiaries #ootd #styleblogger #whatiwore #outfitideas #outfitinspiration #followfriday

P.S Don’t bombard your blogs with futile hashtags.

6) Make a Time Table

It is human tendency to take flexible work for granted. So, organization is a prerequisite to maintain the regularity and making a time table sorts it out. Sounds too juvenile? But, maintaining the time table of your posts give you enough time to research about a particular topic rather than taking a plunge on it and ending up with shoddy work. Also, maintaining a time table will enable you to put adequate posts entailing an array of topics.

  • Monday works for Personal Style
  • Tuesday works for Street Style Inspiration
  • Wednesdays works for Beauty
  • Thursdays works for Motivational Content
  • Friday works for DIY

7) Read, Read and Read.

There is no escape from reading if you want to make it to the top of those fashion bloggers. Possessing an amazing fashion sense is great but reading a lot adds a cherry to the cake. Ok, since you are a fashion blogger, I am gonna recommend which gravitas your interest.

My personal favorites are:

The Fashion Book – Alice Mackrell

This book entails everything about fashion industry right from clothing, footwear, photographers, stylists and exude a fresh look about fashion.

Alexa Chung – It

Who on earth doesn’t know Alexa Chung; a model and contributing editor to British Vogue? Her best seller, “It” gives us an array of topics right from how to get dresses, how to take perfect selfies, her inspirations such as Jane Birkin and Annie Hall and lot more things.

However, it’s not my personal favorite.

Girl Boss- Sophia Amoruso

Yeah yeah every girl’s bio mentions #GirlBoss and we owe a big gratitude to Sophia Amoruso, founder and Executive Chairman of Nasty Gal who coined this term. Hailing from a middle class background to a shoplifting teenager to a multimillionaire CEO, this book traverses through her journey in the field of fashion as well her life.

  • Be Yourself

The most underestimated point which actually leads to a successful blogger is “Being Yourself”. Now, if you are seeking to find success overnight, this post is definitely not for you. But, putting your efforts with your unique voice will definitely make you a success undoubtedly. When I decided to start a fashion blog, I wished to break the ice by going beyond the stereotypes of fashion bloggers. I wanted my blog to showcase more than OOTD’s. Thus, the USP of “The Petite Girl” is it talks about history of fashion, technicalities, trends, thoughts about life, women, power, ambitions and overall fashion world.

Well this is my unique voice. What about you?

Hopefully, this blog will turn helpful for all my blogger friends out there. Waiting for your comments!

On being asked, “What is fashion?”, you may earn a myriad of replies as follows:

Following trends is Fashion

Looking Beautiful is Fashion

Exuding style statement is Fashion

Reflecting one’s Individual Identity is Fashion

Although mostly, we remain oblivious towards one important definition of Fashion, “What we wear is Culture”. It is an expressive visual statement which embodies the cultural influence. Lately, I had visited Kashmir, heaven of India and without a shadow of doubt, it is enchanting in every bit. During my visit to Tulip Garden, I saw throng of tourists experimenting with colorful clothes and accessories which typify Kashmiri culture. And there, I realized how something mere like fashion can manifest your identity entirely within itself.

About Kashmiri Outfit:

“Phiran”, a long loose robe is worn by both Kashmiri men and women. However, the latter wear phirans with ornamental and embroidered work. Sleeves are broad and designed with intricate details and the robe is coupled with a headdress called “Taranga”.  Generally, Muslim women wear red head cloth known as “Kasaba”. The headdress is akin to a turban embellished with heavy ornaments.

Initially, I was quite reluctant to wear it as it is not even remotely close to my taste in fashion. But, as rightly it is said, if you a true fashionista, you need to dare and take the plunge in fashion. Yes, it might not be trending. But, who on earth said that fashion is dominated solely by those Instagram bloggers and influencers. Instead of following the crowd, let’s acknowledge the roots of fashion and comprehend the ropes of it. Enough of following trends like a bandwagon effect. Let’s heed to cultural fashion for a change. And, you may never know, it can actually spur a new fashion statement.

With this, let me introduce few cultural statements adopted by runways which eventually manifested in trends.

  • Beads

Beads which is extensively seen in our daily outfits and accessories was inspired by Yoruba tribe, known prominently for their bead work tradition. The voodoo practitioners known as Egungum masquerades themselves in beaded fabrics to perform rituals.

  • Head wraps

Head wraps are dominating runways and street style but they owe a big gratitude towards Xhosa culture of South Africa. Head wraps are basically status symbols worn by Xhosa women.

  • Plaids

“Plaids” are a staple in our wardrobe . Your style may spell grunge, street wear or casual, plaids will be your fave. Originally hailing from Scotland, where they are known as “Tartans”, they were introduced to us as “Plaids” by Native Americans. The latter was inspired by former’s cultural dress which entailed plaids extensively.

And, I realized how our judgement and objectifying particular culture can be detrimental for embracing different cultures. People may label fashion as futile but this fashion itself compelled me to think about “Unity in Diversity”.

Now, what’s your definition of “Fashion”?

14 fashion terms every girl must know in 2018!

The eternal relationship between fashion and girls have been since decades and it seems boundless. Fashion had always been our forte and we reign over it like a queen. But, as much you love fashion, do you know fashion? Apart from your sartorial style, how well acknowledged are you with fashion vocabulary? Recently, I came across a fashion blogger misconstruing tartan with checks. On a worst scenario, they don’t know the existence of the word, “tartan”. Also, once a You Tuber botched her vlog by misplacing shift dress with sheath dress. Well, individual sartorial style will always be helmed as the messiah of fashion although being well versed with fashion vocabulary is quintessential for a fashionista. Isn’t it?

So, let’s brush few  jargons  in order to avoid being a fish out of water if you ever come across someone like Miranda Priestly. Shudders

  1. Shift Dress vs Sheath Dress

Shift dress:

If you wanna camouflage the unwanted flab of your waist, stomach or breast, then shift dress is your saviour. Falling straight down from shoulders and generally, above the knees less, it is less fitted over hips and waist. Since it lacks a defined waist, it resembles a flapper dress and 1920’s style. Owing to its comfort and flowy nature, it ticks itself for all body types. Still, if you are hesitant about its appearance, style it with accessories and steal the show. Totally recommended for boxy, straight shape or pregnant women.

  • Sheath dress:

Sheath dress embraces your body curves and basically, lengths down to the knees. Mostly, confused with a bandage dress, it slightly differs from it. Sheath dress defines the epithet, elegant while bandage dress defines the epithet, sexy. The latter is much more figure hugging while former has not well defined silhouette and but comfortable comparatively

2) Checks vs Tartan vs Gingham

Checks:

If casual style is your signature, checks will be dominating your wardrobe. Although, are you sure, they are checks and not tartan? Well, if they are modified stripes entailing crossed horizontal and vertical lines, they are checks definitely. Mainly, they will be limited to two colors.

Tartan:

Have you ever seen Scottish people in their traditional costume? Basically, it is tartan. Similarly to checks, it entails crisscrossed horizontal and vertical lines but in multiple colors. Tartan is usually referred as plaid in USA and Canada.

Gingham:

Fashion runways seem dominated by this term and it’s all the rage on internet. Signifying a prairie style fashion, it is our spring favorite item. But honestly, gingham is not a design but a plain woven fabric made from dyed cotton. It can be striped or checked.

3) Jumper vs Jumpsuit vs Romper

Jumper :

Mostly in denim fabric, it has attached suspenders in front panel and typify typical USA style. Available in corduroy, cotton and twill. Originally imported from Paris, Jumpers are basically touted as sports fashion.

Jumpsuit:

Jumpsuit is a one piece garment having blouse attached to the bottom.  Available in all fabrics, it is devoid of suspenders but in trendy patterns.

Romper:

A romper differs from jumpsuit in terms of bottom length. It has attached shorts instead of bottom and signify bohemian look effectively. Summers beckon rompers and street style too.

4) A line dress vs Trapeze dress

A line dress:

The holy grail for all body types, A line dress is generally narrow at the shoulders and have a wider hem. Forming a A shape silhouette, it is fitted from the top and widens at the bust. Christian Dior collection of Spring, 1955 introduced the collection of A line in Paris.

Trapeze dress:

Hailing retro style, it is trapezoid in shape and widens towards the waist and legs. It is floaty in nature and have a bit of frumpy appearance. Much suited for pear shaped woman as the cuts of the dress accentuates the upper body impeccably and camouflage wider lower body. Always be assured to choose the length of the trapeze dress above knees.

5) Oxford Shoes vs Derby Shoes

Oxford shoe:

Generally categorized as formal shoe, oxford shoe has closed lacing and it’s front stitching are underneath the vamp. Originated in Scotland and Ireland, they are also called, Balmoral Shoe

Derby shoe:

Hailing from the sports background, Derby shoes has an open lacing section and can be fitted according to comfort of the wearer. It is also known as Blucher

6) Stilettos vs Pumps

Stilettos :

If you are an ardent fan of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw and Manola Blahniks, you can’t evade stilettos. Setting the highest benchmark for appearance of shoes, stilettos ticks the boxes for highest heels, sassy appearance and ultra feminine look. It’s heels are long and narrow, giving prominence to effective bust and butt. They are much preferred for festive occasions owing to not so comfortable in nature.

Pumps:

Pumps are usually round cut or peep toes and can be worn for both casual and formal wear.  Having wider and shorter heels, they are much comfortable in nature. Also known as court shoes, they have closed heels with no buckles. Usually, their heel are limited to 5 cm.

Which confusing fashion terminologies have you come across? Waiting for your comments!

Don’t we live in a hypocrite world where we should embrace our individuality although 36-24-36 is considered impeccable. Where social validation is not necessary to judge ourselves yet everyone seeks it. Where style should exude your real self, although, we fall in trap of trends. So, while pondering about fashion trends of 2017, I resolutely decided to end this dichotomy. Just because some freak is doing unicorn hair color, it does not imply to you, right? However, for those freaks, we are mundane freaks.

Hence, I have conjured and explored few trends of 2017, adding an element of my own style.

  • Statement sleeves

Seeking for wardrobe spin with a stir of drama to it? Chuck the norms and be audacious to embrace the hottest trend of 2017, statement sleeves. With its unicorn quality of insouciance and flamboyance, colossal sleeves are going full throttle.

In one swoop, this trend is your ticket to be showstopper.

  • Utilitarian trend

If you nod yes to androgynous trend, utilitarian trend is up your ante. Wafting through aesthetics of fashion and juxtaposing elegance and style together, these pieces are a treat. And finally, its transcending navy blue, black and olive green shades. Minimalism is new sexy.

  • Stripes

Queen Victoria’s, four year old son wearing sailor suit heralded the biggest fashion trend, stripes. Being a sheer classic, this beloved trend is the comeback of 2017. Be it classic Bretons or Rainbow stripes, they are all the rage currently.

  • Gingham

Bring your inner prairie girl to life by embracing sartorial showstopper, Gingham. Apt for the edgier style with the bestowed preppy vibe. With a bandwagon in this trend, be it in shirts, blouse, skirt, pants or dress, it’s a colossal fashion force to be reckoned with.

  •  Athleisure

Won’t it be a dream come true when you can just walk off in leggings? Why should we go an extra mile to get ready, right? Yes finally, we can merge the gap between workout clothes and style with the hottest trend of 2017, Athleisure. Trust me, you won’t seem like a fish out of water, if you know the right styling.

E.g. Leggings with shimmering top teams up razzle dazzle with comfort so impeccably.

  • All White

White on white seems flouting the taught fashion lessons over years. However, this monochrome trend has put a unique spin on our sartorial knowledge. Holding a timeless appeal, sheer white is giving us a sophisticated fashion attack. Don’t hesitate to play it with textures such as lace, chiffon, silk or statement accessories.

  •  Asymmetry

Those who are ardent followers of fashion are the ardent rule breakers as well. Fashion seeks for drama and break norms. Unfettered by rules, asymmetry trend is ruling the hot list of trends as well.

  •  Floral

No other trend can exude the barometer of femininity as immaculately as floral trend.  Injecting a burst of cheerfulness, you can channel this trend without breaking the bank. Aren’t those playful cocktails and sunshine all what you had waited for?

  • Checks

If you haven’t done your fashion homework well, you may misunderstood gingham as checks. But, gingham hails from family of stripes and not checks.  Although, 2017 sees the resurgence of plaid checkered outerwear and reaffirms old trend is gold.

  • Bra out

Girls, are your eyes popping out by reading this or Guys, are you eagerly waiting for this? Hold on horses, you both. Without wreaking a total mayhem, bra out trend can be a complete knock out. Still baffled? Take some inspiration from Kendall Jenner!
