Being a girl of 21st century, western outfits have encroached my closet luxuriously over ethnic outfits. Be it in terms of comfort, style or trends, we will always pick up jeans, skirts, one pieces or far fetched gowns. But, saree? Meh! we hardly give it a chance. As an Indian, I had seen it my…
While the dove grey sky, lacing of snow and wintry breeze were creating a mosaic of monochrome, I was battling with my OOTD for winter. Oops..OOTDs as mere one outfit seems a foolish choice in this biting weather. Winters beckons bundles of layering and lays kibosh on our hopes of fashion glory. While necessity of keeping ourselves warm surmounts over luxury of looking sassy, we end up assaulting our fashion sense. Our outfit disappoints us and so seems our personality. Ultimately, sombre of winter pervades all over.
So, can fashion still be glorious amidst dark winter?
You may arch your eyebrows if ever asked to wear a camisole top in winter. Dappled sunlight will entertain it but not harsh, cold winter, right? But, a blouse under the camisole top or sweater thrown nonchalantly over it can make up for a delicious audacious look. Keep the tone monochrome or pastels and some accessories such as beanies, dainty bracelets or neck pieces can do the magic.
Ready to shake the chill in style?
Winter demands slip dresses to be relegated to the back burner. But, looking sexy isn’t reserved only for summers, right? Hit the sweet spot between sexy and cute by balancing a sleep dress with a turtle neck blouse. If not turtleneck, just be faithful to few rules of fashion. May be a crew neck or collar neck can be your few other options.
Ever imagined to dance under those flint grey skies overseeing the land and your boots crunching through powdered snow. In the glare white, you are like a fairy with your tulle skirt waving all around and you are sparkling like magic. Enough of fairy tale right?
But, it’s time to make this fairy tale a reality despite of nippy weather. How about marrying romance with insouciance by throwing a leather jacket over your tulle. Tweed jackets can also be another resort although avoid bomber jackets for tulles totally.
Mix of Textures
Layering does not beckon piling heaps of layer haphazardly by laying kibosh on fashion sense. It is an art where mixture of texture, colors, fabrics and patterns should be flirted and complemented to create a whole new narrative.
Start with a casual tee, be it stripes or a plain one, add a shirt over it, be it chambray or plaid and add a blazer or leather jacket as a final touch. You can also try two tees of different textures, a denim jacket and a plaid jacket as the final layering.
Keep the colors minimal to one or two families and so the textures.
Cardigans and shawls
Undoubtedly, they are staples of our wardrobe but wearing them in a mundane style should not be your call. Try all the stylish ingredients together; an adorable dress cinched with a belt, a contrast cardigan, a shawl wrapped audaciously, fishnets and boots. Let your fashion transcend to another level.
Practice makes a mean perfect. And, this starts with layering. What’s your call?
With no voluminous boobs
Or great booty to see.
Her face seemed like darkened foliage from summer kiss,
Those palms seem ruthlessly rough enduring hardships,
Her black thick hair tumbled back,
But, they dont smell of jasmine or lilly.
Who will look at such a girl?
Who is always seen in salwaar kameez.
But, she is a girl like smell after rain,
A ray of new life,
Who will promise to swallow your pain.
She is living nightmares more than dreams,
Yet, she will love you insanely and selflessly,
Whispering those gleeful songs of life which she had never seen,
Gifting you all the happiness which she always wondered herself to see.
She will keep her dreams aside to fulfill yours,
Seeing your achievements is a blessing for her, she always thought,
Did you ever care to see those hidden layers of her heart?
Which time and again were stripped badly.
Bcuz, she isn’t a girl, your eyes will attract,
Or your heart will chase around,
Your heart just want pretty things you see,
Who doesn’t even know what ‘BEAUTIFUL’ really means!!
Think charms, brooms and wands and immediately, a sweet ride of nostalgia starts weaving around; Harry Potter of course. While the four houses of Hogwarts; Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, hufflepuff and Slytherin always enchanted me, I pondered where I would have been placed by the Sorting Hat. (I am still waiting for my Hogwarts letter) Owing to wisdom, quirkiness and creativity as the significant traits of Ravenclaw, I would have been classmate of Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang probably. So, my today’s look had been inspired by Rowena Ravenclaw, the founder of Ravenclaw and also, a beautiful witch known for her sheer intelligence and creativity. Had she been in our century, she would have been a sartorial queen definitely.
Look 1: Party wear for Ravenclaw
Weaving the heritage of Ravenclaw, choose colors such as blue and bronze for your outfit. These colors have their association with sky and eagle feathers. Thus, a dreamy flowing blue gown turned up my alley and the embellishments notched up the look much higher.
Rowena’s diadem, the only relic of Ravenclaw and one of the horcruxes of Lord Voldemort played a pivotal role in Deathly Hallows. “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.” were the inscribed words on it. Well, I found this diadem from forest of Albania already before Voldemort. (Just kidding). Opt for an oval shaped blue sapphire stone studded with silver stones which will reckon the diadem, a charm deemed to increase the prominence of the wearer.
Hair and Makeup
Flirt with tongs for your hair and keep your makeup subtle. Splash some blue or bronze eye shadows and steal the show with a bright red lipstick.
Look 2: Casual wear for Ravenclaw
If fairy tale makes you cringe, then casual wear can be your resort. The second look of ravenclaw’s demands a navy blue skirt and grey blouse and can be tweaked vice versa. Sassy blue boots and grey stockings can be your saviour for winter.
Beanie can be your best friend or may be a muffler weaving a tapestry of blue and bronze colors. Also, a cute silver dainty bracelet can speak charms for you.
Hair and Makeup
Bundle up your hair in a high pony with velvet blue hair band or just let them down adorning with a blue and bronze hair band. Opt for a nude makeup and remember, “Subtle is the Key”.
And there you go, Ravenclaw!
Eagles are here,
Our sight is clear.
Clever to the core,
We won’t bore.
The cup is for Ravenclaw.
The cup is ours,
Caw, Caw, Caw!
After chasing fireflies with my two insanely cute kids, I was scrambling all around. More two hours for his arrival and I have to cook his favorite chicken (which I never ever imagined to touch), clean the house; an epitome of mess, entertain the kids so they won’t bother me while preening myself, especially as I slip in that sexy dress which I bought in his absence. Till now, I am just scrambling around like a maniac wearing a stained apron and my hair bundled out of the way. While brewing the stew, tight deadline bestowed upon me by my supervisor is haunting me. Still wonder, whether he gets any premonition about my happiness and plans to be a spoilsport? Oh my stew, I burnt it. Shit! Shit! And here, Ayan starts wailing while Ahana enjoys scattering his blocks. Oh gosh, I miss him. His eyes which I see in Ayan, his lips which I see in Ahana. Come home soon, so we can have a perfect meal, read bedtime stories for our kids, make some love and watch stars till the night ends.
Isn’t this “Having it all” really means?
Hold on, it’s just a snippet of my imagination. Blame the game of ghar ghar for germinating such desires in my head since age of 10. It taught me to a perfect wife, perfect mother and a perfect individual abiding by duties and responsibilities. But honestly, I don’t even wrap up my bedsheets after I wake up, abandon the kitchen in a mess, don’t give a hoot about making food (well, I can’t even cook much), never pick up calls in first place or keep it on airplane mode intentionally to evade unnecessary talking, at times, wander around aimlessly, without informing a single person on this earth. Also, sometimes, risk my life in woods recklessly where rumors work overtime about leopards looming around and akin to a haunted soul, do everything except sleeping at night.
So, can I ever reconcile the schism between imaginative idea of “Having it All” with the real idea of “Having it all”?
Maybe we can. Maybe we can’t. But, before everything, you need to understand, “Who are you as an individual? What do you really want from life?” Does climbing mountains tickle your fancy or a formidable post in a plush office, does being a CEO is your ultimate dream or being a house maker, is both on your list and are you struggling to maintain the equilibrium or do you want to be a wanderer and care for none ?
Honestly, if you struggle for all these answers, you will be gifted with new answers each time. Aren’t we human beings strange creatures? We change with time. We want everything and all at once. Why can’t we believe “OK is Good Enough”?
So, for now,
It’s okay, if you aren’t living career of your dreams.
It’s okay, if you are a jilted lover.
It’s okay, if you cannot afford luxury.
It’s okay, if you are a chaotic mess.
Oh yes! My career is in balance and so is my love life. I detest myself for feeling emotions so deeply where they aren’t valued. My bank balance might be nil by next month and luxury seems just a far fetched dream. I am disappointing my supervisor and so my parents. My dreams are dwindling away and so am I.
And, here I am again grabbing a subway sandwich, chasing a Churchgate fast local, nestling my cell between shoulder and ear, justifying my boss about the delay, rolling my eyes seeing the over crowded train, agitating over stinky smell of fish, battling my way out of train and automatically landing on the station by force way stronger than gravity and gifted elbow jabs as souvenirs of the journey.
“Oh Gosh, Can I please have my “Having it All” dream”, I wonder while walking out. But, as I watch the roaring waves kissing the rocks wildly from a distant, I paced, paced more quickly. Letting the wind mischievously blow my hair, splashing ripples of water kissing my skin, dappled sunlight glinting my face, I realized, “Oh yes, I have it all. Even now, I have it all”.
Maybe, “Surviving is the real key of the journey”. And, you never know, you may find “Having it All” in the midst of it.
Try it out once!
